If you’ve ever had ants in your home, you know what a nightmare it can be. Ants are fascinating creatures, but that doesn’t mean we want to live with them. Ants work together as a team to create underground homes that are intricate and complex in detail. They can also carry several times their weight back to their homes. They’re hard-working insects. With that said, it can also be a challenge to get them to exit our homes or gardens. And I live in Texas, where some of the ants bite really hard. What they do is invade food sources so that they can carry the food back to their queen.
When we see ants, many of us step on them to get rid of them, but there’s actually a better way to handle your ant problem. Let’s check out a few home remedies to see how to get ants gone from our homes and keep them gone for good.
Cinnamon Scented Defense
Ants have a strong sense of smell and their odor receptors are more powerful than those of most insects. You can actually use this to your advantage to get rid of ants. Ants hate the smell of cinnamon, and you can use cinnamon essential oil as a kind of natural ant repellant. To do this, add 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon essential oil to a cup of water. Soak a cotton ball in the water and use the cotton ball to wipe down the areas where ants tend to get in your homes, such as windowsills, doors, and entryways. You can also leave whole cinnamon cloves lying around outside, or even fill a bottle with cinnamon water for spraying.
Another thing you can do is boil cayenne pepper in a big pot of water. When it’s boiling, pour the spicy water where you see anthills, including sidewalk cracks.
Ants hate the smell of vinegar and you can use that to your advantage. Fill a spray bottle with equal parts distilled vinegar and water, then add a few drops of lemon essential oil. After shaking well, spray it around your baseboards or windowsills to keep ants out.
Sugar and Borax Balls
To kill ants, you can make a handy ant repellent that combines sugar and borax. Use 1/2 cup of white granulated sugar and 1.5 teaspoons of borax. Put them both into a glass jar. Add two cups of boiling water and stir until it’s all dissolved. Soak cotton balls in the jar and leave them out for the ants.
