Most commercials are forgettable. They typically last only a few seconds, and the idea is to elicit some emotion from us to make the product or service they sell more memorable to their consumers. Most of the time, the process is so obvious that our minds sort of glaze over them as though they are meaningless visual distractions before or during the program we are interested in. But then there are those exceptional commercials that grab you and never let go. They somehow make you forget that we are watching a sales pitch and touch something deep within our hearts.
Sometimes these commercials can be humorous, but the ones that really stay with us touch deeper emotions. For example, one commercial captures a memory many of us had as little children when we believed our parents were the most interesting people on the planet. In the commercial, which is set around Christmas time over the course of a man’s lifetime, we first see a dad entertaining his infant son with a quirky song and dance routine. The song he dances to is “Come and Get Your Love” by Redbone, released in 1974. As the child grows older, the dad continues his dancing tradition to this song just for his son. And as a little boy, this charming act delights him every time.
However, as the boy grows older, this loving father-son tradition begins to make the young teen (who becomes a young man) feel embarrassed.
But, at the very end of the commercial, the young man presents his dad with a heartwarming surprise.
While the now-older father is reading by the Christmas tree, he hears a phone vibrating. Curious, he walks over to the tree to discover a present. Once he opens the box, he finds a ringing phone. Upon answering, his son appears on the screen along with the man’s infant grandson.
The young dad says, “Hi Dad, Merry Christmas,” before starting up their favorite song and dancing for his father along with his adorable infant son — bringing us back full circle.
The commercial is for Bouygues Telecom, a product most Americans have never heard of. Nonetheless, this is one commercial many of us will never forget!
