It’s hard to find anyone who doesn’t love the fresh pine scent of real Christmas trees. And while fake trees are less of a mess to clean, they’re just not the same as the real thing. However, one of the biggest problems with real trees is the hassle of finding one, taking it home, getting it through the door, and finally getting it set up. Then after Christmas, you have to take the tree down and throw it away. Now, if this sounds like an awful waste — you’re absolutely right; it is. About 7 million trees end up in landfills each year so that folks can enjoy them for a couple of weeks in December.
However, there’s a company in London, England, that’s allowing folks to enjoy still the benefits of having a real Christmas tree while being environmentally responsible. Best of all, they take a lot of the hassle out of the process! London Christmas Tree Rental allows you to rent pot-grown, sustainable, living Christmas Trees for the season, which is considerably cheaper than buying a new one each year. In 2018, Catherine Loveless and Jonathan Mearns founded the company after learning how many trees end up in the trash annually.
The way their process works is that you go online to their website and order your tree. Then the company shows up at your door and drops it off. And since it already comes potted, all you need to do is water it daily.
Then when January rolls around, they pick up the tree from you and bring it back to the farm where your tree will live for another year.
🎄🎄Not academia related but I'm way too hyped about this sustainable Xmas gem🎄🎄
London Christmas Tree Rental lets you RENT a tree in a pot. In Jan he goes back to live on a farm (can get the same one back next year). When he reaches 7ft he "retires" & gets planted in a forest. pic.twitter.com/Fnmc1LddEr

Plus, you can rent the same tree every year if you want! In fact, the company encourages you to personalize your tree by naming it — making it a part of your family!
The main thing you have to do is keep your tree alive for the few weeks you have it.
And then when Christmas comes around the next year, you’ll have an even more beautiful tree to decorate, or another family will be able to enjoy it.
While these trees are unique, they’re not what one would consider perfect-looking Christmas trees. But in our opinion, that’s what makes them so special.
Another tip is to ensure your tree isn’t near any heat sources; this can cause the tree to dry out and start dropping needles before eventually dying. Watering it every day with about a pint of water is vital.
This is such a wonderful idea! If you’ve not picked up a tree this year or would like to try renting a real Christmas tree, many companies within the US offer this service as well.
