For 3-year-old Brooklyn Amdracke, Thursdays are her favorite day of the week. That’s because it’s trash day!
Every Thursday morning without fail for the past year, the sweet toddler has eagerly waited by the front window for the arrival of a white garbage truck driven by Delvar Dopson. And on those mornings, Delvar honks and waves while flashing his enormous smile at little Brooklyn.
On the days she misses Delvar, “I’d drive around the neighborhood to find the garbage truck and wave,” says Brooklyn’s mom, Traci.
Then, in 2016, when Brooklyn’s third birthday just happened to fall on Thursday that year, she wished to deliver a special birthday cupcake to Delvar in celebration of her big day. So, little Brooklyn patiently waited at the end of her driveway while holding wrapped cupcakes in anticipation of Delvar’s familiar big white garbage truck.
As his truck came roaring down her street and stopped in front of her home, Delvar popped out to formally meet his biggest fan for the first time. Brooklyn was speechless!
Her mom told Delvar how much his honks and waves mean to Brooklyn. Delvar told Traci that he tries to get out of his meeting every Thursday morning so he can make sure he catches his biggest fan.
After Delvar left that morning, Traci remembered how her daughter was unusually quiet in the backseat.
“I asked her if she was OK, and she said ‘Mommy, I’m so happy.’”
“Every day is a great day but today is somebody’s favorite day of the week!” Delvar wrote in a post on Facebook. “Well… It’s mine too, Lol.”
The next Thursday, little Brooklyn was treated with a special surprise as Delvar arrived to present her with a belated birthday gift.
“He walked her around to the other side of the truck and pulled out the most amazing, awesome and generous birthday gifts for her,” Traci said. “He said he did a little research and knew she liked the movie Frozen, so his wife made this incredible basket full of everything Frozen.”
“My job is not complete just because I can finish a route,” Delvar said in a post on his Facebook page. “It’s when I can influence someone to the point where they choose to smile.”
Delvar and Brooklyn’s sweet friendship has only grown since then. Not only did he send her some special behind-the-scenes videos giving her a special tour of the rest of the garbage collection process, which he titled “Kinda stinky but always smiley,” but Delvar also delivered another birthday surprise a month later.
And that year, Traci also happened to have a birthday that fell on a Thursday, and in true Delvar fashion, he arrived with a dozen purple and pink cupcakes for the family.
