In May 2020, as Amber Heard started her week of testimony, the actress made some shockingly disturbing claims concerning her time dating and being married to actor Johhny Depp. The former Pirates of the Caribbean star’s libel trial against his ex-wife continues as Heard spent three days on the witness stand.
On Tuesday, Dr. Dawn Hughes, a cynical forensic psychologist the actress hired, took the witness stand in her defense. Dr. Huges stated in her testimony that she believes Heard has post-traumatic stress disorder caused by “intimate partner violence by Mr. Depp.”
The claim that Heard has PTSD contradicts what the jury heard last week when a clinical physiologist hired by Depp to evaluate his ex-wife claimed that Heard has a borderline personality disorder and histrionic personality disorder.
During Heard’s testimony, the psychologist, Shannon Curry, testified that the scores Heard received coincide with someone who is “full of rage” and “socially sophisticated.”
“These people might have that anger kind of explode out at times,” Curry said.
“They tend to be very passive-aggressive. They may be self-indulgent, very self-centered. They could use manipulation tactics to try to get their needs met. They’re very needy of attention, acceptance, approval.”
While the Doctor is said to have evaluated Heard for at least 12 hours, Hughes reportedly observed her client for 29 hours, meeting with her four times and engaging in Zoom conversations on two occasions. According to People, Hughes says she’s also studied her client’s past depositions and medical records, interviewed her prior treated physicians and spoke with Heard’s late mom.
During Heard’s testimony, Heard made several allegations painting her ex-husband as an abusive, drug-fueled monster, who allegedly digitally penetrated her on more than one occasion and claims he vaginally penetrated her with a liquor bottle.
Hughes alleges that Depp was often in an alcohol-fueled “rage” when these alleged incidents occurred in their relationship.
“There are indications, as I’ve mentioned before, of the sexual assault and the sexual abuse, and how he would, when he was angry and when he was drunk — it was mostly drug- and alcohol-fueled rage when he would throw her on the bed and try to have sex with her,” said Hughes.
“Then, you know, if he was not able to perform, he would get more angry at her and blame her. We have this dynamic of blaming her for his inability to take responsibility for his behavior.”
Hughes also cited notes by Amber’s therapist in which they described moments when the actor allegedly forced Heard to perform orals sex on him, describing the alleged manipulations as “moments of dominance.” Seh also talked about an alleged incident in which Depp is alleged to have conducted a forced cavity search on her client while looking for cocaine he couldn’t find.
“Mr. Depp performed a ‘cavity search’ and ostensibly was looking for drugs and felt it acceptable to rip off her nightgown and stick his fingers up her vagina to look for cocaine and thought maybe she was hiding it there,” Hughes told the court, according to People.
“There was another incident in the Bahamas where, when he got angry, he took his fingers and he put them in her vagina and moved her around violently in the closet. And, of course, the incident in Australia — one of the most severe instances of sexual violence that Ms. Heard had to endure — when he was beating her and choking her and telling her, ‘I’m going to f—–g kill you. I hate you.’ … He grabbed a bottle that was on the bar and penetrated her with that bottle.”
During her testimony, Heard confirmed these allegations of sexual assault and became emotional when speaking about the first time Depp allegedly struck her. Buzzfeed News reports that Heard alleges he first slapped her in 2012.
The actress says they were sitting on Depp’s sofa, which allegedly had a “jar of cocaine” on a table next to it. She says she asked Depp about one of his tattoos. After he explained that the tattoo said “wino,” Heard says she laughter and Depp then slapped her.
Out of sheer disbelief, the actress said she laughed even more.
“I laughed because I didn’t know what else to do. I thought, ‘This must be a joke. This must be a joke,’ because I didn’t know what was going on. I just stared at him, kind of laughing at him still, thinking he was going to start laughing too to tell me it was a joke,” Heard to the court, adding that Depp responded to her continued laughter by saying, “You think you’re funny bitch,” and slapped her again.
After she stared at him in disbelief following the second slap, Depp allegedly slapped her a third time, hard enough to cause her to lose her balance, the news outlet reported.
“I’m all a sudden realizing that the worst thing has just happened to me that could possibly happen to you. I realize — I wish so much that he would have said he was joking,” Heard said.
Heard said that when she lay on the floor, Depp started to show remorse. He reportedly began to cry before promising her that he would never lay another finger on her again. However, Heard claims that the abuse never stopped.
“I didn’t want to leave him,” Heard said in her testimony. “I didn’t want this to be the reality. I didn’t want to have the man I was in love with — I know you don’t come back from that, you know. I’m not dumb. I knew you can’t hit a woman. I knew you can’t hit a man.”
Heard also talked about the cavity search in great detail, saying it took place while they were vacationing with friends. The group reportedly just finished doing some drugs outside of their trailer when one of the female friends placed her head on Heard’s shoulder.
The actress says this made Depp very angry, and she had to take him inside the trailer to calm him down. Heard says that Depp started screaming at her and smashing things before asking her about the location of his drugs.
She said it was then that he began searching her body for the cocaine. “I just stood there and stared at the stupid light,” Heard said. She continued saying no one they were with on that trip knew of the abuse and that she felt “lonely.”
However, in his earlier testimony, Depp painted Heard as the abuser and claimed he had never physically abused her or any of the other women he’d been with. Depp also says he’s lost several lucrative roles due to Heard’s allegations.
Heard’s claims came under intense scrutiny after recordings began to surface in which the actress admitted to striking Depp, at one point calling him a “baby” and suggesting that if he went public, people would believe her over him.
“You can please tell people that it was a fair fight, and see what the jury and judge thinks. Tell the world, Johnny, tell them, Johnny Depp, I Johnny Depp, a man, I’m a victim too of domestic violence.”
“And I, you know, it’s a fair fight. And see how many people believe or side with you,” Johnny Depp then breaks in the conversation, saying, “It doesn’t matter; fair fight my ass.”
Heard continues on…”Because you’re big, you’re bigger and you’re stronger. And so when I say that I thought that you could kill me, that doesn’t mean you counter with you also lost your own finger. ‘I, I’m not trying to attack you here, I’m just trying to point out the fact of why I said call 911. Because I was, you had your hands on me after you threw a phone at my face. ‘And it’s got crazy in the past, and I truly thought I need to stop this madness before I get hurt.”
Depp seems to be upset at his wife’s explanation of the events and replies ‘Oh my god. Do you believe all this Amber? Do you believe all this,” Depp says. “Yes, the f***, yes, yes.” Heard responds.
Johnny then asks his ex-wife, “Do you believe you’re an abuser? Do you believe you abused me physically?”
Amber answers saying, “Do you know I’m a 115, well not anymore, but I was a 115 lb almost 115 lb woman…have I ever been able to knock you off of your feet? Or knock you off balance? — “You’re going to get up on the stand, Johnny, and say, ‘she started it’? Really? I have never been able to overpower you that’s the difference between me and you…and that’s a difference, that’s a whole world, and there’s a jury and there’s a judge will see that there’s a very big difference between me and you.”
At one point in the conversation, Amber is clear with Johnny not only is she saying he is violent and has assaulted her…she says she has collected evidence of the alleged incidents. “It would not be about me throwing you under the bus”, she says.
She continues,, “You know what it would be? It would be released through documented people, coming on the record, and, having the protection to do so, that hasn’t had yet. It would be eyewitness statements. It would be evidence. Tons of it. And it would be through the years.”
